It seems easier for us to put our differences at the center rather than our common humanity. But God’s dream of community is only possible with the hard work of treating one another with dignity.
Lord, teach us to pray.
it was my mother who truly taught me how to pray. Not just how to pray, but how to pray without ceasing. Every day, every morning, no exceptions.
Relationship
the word that kept rising in my spirit was relationship. Relationship with the people we met, with the land we stood on, with our own stories, and with God. And not just any relationship, but one rooted in presence—a willingness to slow down, to listen, to be fully there.
Receiving
Who do you identify with in the story of the Good Samaritan? Most of us aspire to be the good guy. But what if we are the one lying in the ditch?
America
“Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—
Let it be that great strong land of love.
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.
Vengeance
Vengeance is what many of us have been taught since we were small children. If we are honest, an “eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” has an appealing logic. Power, the reasoning goes, is for settling scores and annihilating foes. Except, Jesus rebukes our default to vengeances.
Silence
Summer is here, Thank God! I hope your plans include family, food and fun. And one more thing, silence.
Truth
Because truth is difficult to handle, Jesus follows up by saying, that we can depend on the “Spirit of truth to be our guide.” A great indicator that we are growing as followers of Jesus is the amount of truth that we can hear and handle.
Diversity
Creation declares diversity is Godly. That makes God big, generative and courageous. We, however, tend toward smallness, restriction and fear. It’s tragic that people of faith have allowed politics of manipulation to denigrate and weaponize what is the beauty of God’s imagination.
