John’s commitment to God resulted in his incarceration. There, all alone, in his dank cell, he has a question, “is Jesus the Messiah or should we wait for another?” John’s question is our question, is Jesus deserving of our faith, hope and following? Or, is he just one of a zillion enigmatic, charismatic, itinerant wonder workers? Jesus’ response is classic Jesus, “tell John what you hear and see: the blind gain sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised and the poor have good news brought to them.” Jesus’ response is the equivalent of his Declaration of Independence from traditional expectations of what a Messiah ought to look like. Jesus’ response puts John’s question back in John’s and our lap to answer. Is this Jesus, who prioritizes the behaviors Jesus listed, the Messiah you are waiting for?
