Jeremiah is sick with grief. The poor have no advocates. Worse than that, no one cares enough to grieve after them. There is a drought of tears for the poor. The system is rigged in favor of the haves over the have-nots. County budgets are balanced on the backs of the poor. Exploitation! The politicians stroke the donors and middle-class voters but are silent about plans to impact the vulnerable. The preachers preach divine kindness and steadfast love but justice and righteousness don’t make it into the homilies. Jeremiah calls to his people to: feel, empathize, cry for the ruin of human beings. Hurt for the poor. Know God’s heart. Be changed.
