Jesus’ cousin John is arrested and will be killed. So, Jesus takes up John’s sermon, “Repent, the kingdom has come near.” This coming and near kingdom does not immediately replace the kingdoms we build. God’s kingdom draws near as an appeal to individuals; a seductive and subversive soul-force often from the sidelines of society where the poor and the weak languish. Kingdom is a particular way God chooses to be to a peculiar world. And God, being extraordinarily patient with us, is committed to increasing and intensifying contractions until darkness has given birth to light.
