We believe sorrow is a part of life. We know that to deny feelings of loss and sadness will ultimately injure us and our society. When the Psalmist sings, “By the waters of Babylon, we sat down and wept when we remembered…,” he’s saying that he refuses to perform a national and personal hollow happiness. He’s saying he sees the actual facts on the ground over the preferred facts. He’s leading his community in something a lot more difficult, mature and holy than the anger, rage and violent acts which have become too frequently our default in seasons of sorrow and loss.

Creemos que el dolor es parte de la vida. Sabemos que negar los sentimientos de pérdida y tristeza en última instancia nos hace daño a nosotros y a nuestra sociedad. Cuando el salmista canta, “Junto a las aguas de Babilonia, nos sentamos y lloramos cuando recordamos…”, está diciendo que se niega a crear una felicidad hueca nacional y personal. Está diciendo que ve los sucesos reales sobre el terreno por encima de los sucesos preferidos. Él está dirigiendo a su comunidad en algo mucho más difícil, maduro y santo que la ira, la rabia y los actos violentos que se han convertido con demasiada frecuencia en nuestra vida en temporadas de dolor y pérdida.
