Singing is what I hear when Mary and Elizabeth come together in a doorway on a hill. Maybe their bellies bump when they embrace. Old and pregnant meets young and pregnant. Old and faithful and young and faithful together, the best kind of church. Each woman is a verse from David’s hymnal… Hymn number 37. “I was young and am now old, never have I seen the righteous forsaken….” What is the antiphon, God is trustworthy! God is trustworthy. God is trustworthy. Elizabeth leads the song, over and against Herod’s sad song. Her song comes from deep inside her, Who am I that I should be so blessed? Joy is kicking inside of me. Myrlie Evers said, “there’s something in me that holds the reins. There is something in me that banishes the pain. There’s something in me I just can’t explain…but thank God there’s something in me.” Mary takes her turn to sing, her song comes from deep inside of her, She tells her soul: “My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” Lowliness and favor together. Always together. It changed my name to blessed. Sometimes God sends you on a long journey to visit you with a new song. Sometimes when God sends a new song to visit you, you take long journeys.
