John called people who do sincere rituals insincerely snakes. He couldn’t get away with that these days but I understand what he means. The insincere were joining the sincere that day at the river to be baptized. They came to that moment motivated by something beyond a desire to change their lives. They came fully trusting that adherence to their religious tradition was sufficient to please God. They didn’t understand that the intention of the tradition was to deliver them to moments of deliberate decisions for God. Still, in an act of mercy, John convenes a remedial riverside teaching, just in case some would be changed: “share, be honest in business dealings, do not cheat or lie.” “Expectation filled the people” after John spoke, they wondered if he was the Messiah. But John pointed beyond himself. Beyond. Beyond tradition; beyond my self-satisfaction, beyond my small understanding, God is doing something. God is alive and effective. “Already,” John says. God is sorting it out. God can sort me out if I am willing to get beyond myself. This was John’s good news.
