People remember Jesus calmed the wind and the sea with a phrase, “Peace! Be still!” What is less remembered is Jesus taught his followers to be able to do the same. “Where is your faith?” Jesus asked them. Following Jesus is about taking up agency. It’s about Jesus believing in us to do the things he taught us. Following Jesus is not some always-trepidatious, hand-wringing kind of hope. Following Jesus is about being immersed in his teachings and hazarding faithful, audacious actions. Maybe church has taught us to be fans of Jesus instead of partners with Jesus.

La gente recuerda cuando Jesús calmó al viento y al mar con una frase, “¡Silencio! ¡Calmate!” Lo que se recuerda menos es que Jesús también le enseñó a sus seguidores a hacer lo mismo. ¿Dónde está tu fe? Les preguntó Jesús. Seguir a Jesús significa tomar acción. Significa que Jesús crea que nosotros podemos hacer las cosas que él nos enseñó. Seguir a Jesús no es una especie de esperanza siempre inquieta y retorcida. Seguir a Jesús significa sumergirse en sus enseñanzas y arriesgar acciones audaces y fieles. Tal vez la iglesia nos ha enseñado a ser fanáticos de Jesús en lugar de ser compañeros de Jesús.
