Rich never noticed Lazarus’ agony. His sickness. His hunger. Rich was comfortable. He ate well, dressed fine, died and went to Hell. There, Rich finally saw Lazarus. Maybe hell is finally seeing. Maybe hell is being near to God, totally enveloped in love and now, seeing and feeling everything that’s not love…all the missed opportunities to love. Maybe that’s what burns like fire and feels like a pitchfork. Agony! And, it would be agony to watch your family choose selfishness over love, now knowing the consequences. My guess is that’s the point of the story, to avoid the agony.
Agonía
El hombre rico nunca notaba la agonía de Lázaro. Su enfermedad. Su hambre. El hombre rico vivia comodamente. El comía bien, se vestía bien, murió y se fue al Infierno. Allí, el hombre rico finalmente vio a Lázaro. Depronto el Infierno es poder ver finalmente. Depronto el Infierno es el estar cerca a Dios, totalmente envuelto en amor y ahora, ver y sentir todo lo que no es amor…todas las oportunidades perdidas para amar. Depronto eso es lo que nos quema como fuego y se siente como una horca. ¡Agonia! Y, sería agonía el ver a una familia escoger el egoísmo sobre el amor, ahora sabiendo las consecuencias. Mi sospecha es que ese es el punto de la historia, el evitar la agonía.
