TOCCOA, GA - Of the seven summer camps at Camp Mikell, Work Camp is unlike any of the other sessions. First, while the other six are gatherings for relaxing, singing, skits, swimming, hiking, and making new friends for life, Work Camp is, well, work. The Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta is celebrating the ongoing impact of its Children’s Defense Fund’s Freedom Schools® summer programs in Atlanta and Macon. Bishop Rob Wright said both programs have proven to close the achievement gap by improving literacy and learning for children who face poverty and lack access to the educational resources they need to succeed. The parking lot at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School in Sandy Springs overflowed Friday with hundreds of faculty and students. Keith Dumke, The Cathedral of St. Philip's Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries, and Hope Westervelt, Director of Youth Ministries of All Saints' Atlanta, together, will minister to the Episcopal students of Georgia Tech and Georgia State University. Keith and Hope look to grow the ministry as it expands from Georgia Tech to include Georgia State students. In addition to weekly gatherings for fellowship and Bible study, they will serve as a pastoral presence and connection to the Episcopal Church for students at the two universities.
