On September 8, 2024, Bishop Wright preached at St. Anthony’s in Winder. The church is 7 miles from Apalachee High School.
“… We can do a better balance of honoring the Second Amendment and also developing something that keeps people safe. We can do both. We don’t have to just give it to politicians and watch them wrestle around. We can do both. We can cherish the values of hunting and sportsmen and all that sort of stuff and at the same time keep war-grade weapons out of our children’s hands. We can do a better job. It has to be said we can. That’s not a blue or red point, that’s common sense. People say we just have to accept this as reality. No, we don’t… God’s use of power is mercy, and God’s mercy to us, each of us, creates in us mercifulness to share and exchange with one another. How do we make this better? We offer ourselves. Not only our words but new deeds. And how do we heal? We offer ourselves. We reach across and find connection. That’s all we’ve ever had, and Jesus is at the center of it all. Agitating, inviting, encouraging so that we might become beloved community.”
