“Do not rob the poor…,” the writer of Proverbs warns us. Don’t rob the poor because, “the Lord pleads their cause.” Exploitation and manipulation of any person is an offense to God. But, according to Scripture, the exploitation and manipulation of the poor particularly displeases God. Most of us as individuals are in no danger of committing this kind of offense against God. Thank God! But, we are people who participate in systems and as Reinhold Niebuhr and Dr. King have told us, “…societies are more immoral than individuals.” Ever notice that we disparage and criminalize migrants and immigrants who come seeking work but don’t also call out those who employ them or take away their right to operate businesses? Justice has been and is now God’s fascination and invitation to us.
