Not Far

Nov 1, 2024

“Not far from the kingdom of God,” is where Jesus located a man who asked him a question. Jesus was encouraging him while simultaneously identifying a gap. What kept this man “…not far from the kingdom….”? What keeps us at a distance? His educational credentials and social pedigree were impeccable but God requires more than achievements and birthright. “There is no love of God except in the love of neighbor.” And, love of neighbor is defined in terms and practices that rule out the possibility of exploitation of any kind. As Dorothy Day has said, “I really only love God as much as I love the person I love the least.” The gap Jesus was identifying that day is our ability to say we love God while hating or being indifferent to those God loves.

The podcast expands on Bishop’s For Faith devotional, drawing inspiration from the life of Jesus to answer 21st-century questions.
