When the moral clarity of an old man and the courage of a young woman align, a nation is changed- that’s the story of Esther! When you read it, notice that Esther and her uncle Mordecai are not attempting to make a nation state where their faith dominates. Their faith inspires them to influence those in power for good. These days we talk about America being founded as a Christian nation and that we would be better off making Christianity the state religion going forward. Bad idea! Our nation was not founded as a Christian nation, our founders weren’t all Christians and the Constitution doesn’t claim to be divinely inspired. We are a radically diverse nation in every way, that is part of the genius of this country. Any efforts that thirst for worldly power to coerce and subordinate in Jesus’ name are not faithful representations of His life and work. What continues to make the difference in structures as big as governments and as small as relationships are those people who have been influenced by Jesus and in response influence others for the good of all.
