They lynched him at lunchtime, at the crest of a hill littered with skulls. This happened with the cooperation of the clergy and the government. He hung to death with his mother watching. He was her first born child. I remember telling the story of Good Friday to children as a school chaplain. They couldn’t make sense of it. “Why would people kill someone who came in peace, they asked?” Good question! Why do we respond to truth by flight, freezing, or fight? God didn’t need the murder of his son to appease his wrath. But God does know that we don’t really learn deeply until after we have destroyed something precious. When we finally realize what we’ve done, only then does true repentance, true change have a real chance.

Lo lincharon a la hora del almuerzo, en la falda de una colina llena de cráneos. Esto sucedió con la cooperación del clero y del gobierno. Estando colgado hasta la muerte junto a su atenta madre. Ella era su primogénita. Recuerdo contar la historia del Viernes Santo a los niños como capellán de la escuela.
