Simon had been fishing all night without any luck but Jesus told him, “…prepare for a catch.” Week after week we worship but do we prepare for a catch? Do we go believing that a blessing is in reach? Or do we worship and pray just out of dumb habit? I know prayer and faithful action are their own reward, but expectations seem to matter with God. Expectation is the first-born child of faith, it is “the substance of things hoped for….” No expectation, no mature faith! When we say we believe in God, we’re not simply saying that we agree with some abstract idea of a cosmic sovereign; we’re saying we expect the things that God has promised to the faithful. “Leave the shallows,” Jesus told Simon and expect something you could not accomplish by yourself. Jesus was calling Simon then and us now to risk being disappointed in God.

Simón había estado pescando toda la noche sin suerte, pero Jesús le dijo: «… prepárate para una captura». Semana tras semana adoramos, pero ¿nos preparamos para una captura? ¿Vamos creyendo que una bendición está al alcance? ¿O adoramos y oramos solo por hábito tonto? Sé que la oración y la acción fiel son su propia recompensa, pero las expectativas parecen ser importantes para Dios. La expectativa es el hijo primogénito de la fe, Él es «la sustancia de las cosas que se esperan»…. ¡Ninguna expectativa, ninguna fe madura! Cuando decimos que creemos en Dios, no estamos simplemente diciendo que estamos de acuerdo con alguna idea abstracta de un soberano cósmico; estamos diciendo que esperamos las cosas que Dios ha prometido a sus fieles. «Deja las aguas poco profundas», le dijo Jesús a Simón, y espera algo que no podrías lograr por ti mismo. Jesús estaba llamando a Simón entonces y a nosotros ahora para arriesgarnos a ser decepcionados en la vida en Dios.
