One of my earliest memories of church was the singing of the Black spiritual—“We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder.” I can remember being confused in my very literal childhood world: who is Jacob and why are we climbing his ladder? I would later learn about metaphor and God’s patriarch, Jacob, who had a dream about a ladder with angels ascending and descending. The ladder represented a connection from God’s Heaven to Jacob’s earthly place with God offering Jacob a blessing and promise of land for his descendants. The spiritual noted the faith of African American slaves: that they would also climb that ladder for their spiritual and physical blessing and freedom. In this current climate when our “freedom” is so tested, the spiritual and Biblical passage remind us of God’s faithfulness to our freedom now and future generations.

Escalando Alto
Uno de mis primeros recuerdos de la iglesia fue un cantico espiritual negroide: «Estamos escalando la escalera de Jacob». Puedo recordar estar confundido en mi mundo de la infancia literal: ¿quién es Jacob y por qué estamos subiendo su escalera? Más tarde aprendería sobre la metáfora y el patriarca de Dios, Jacob, que tenía un sueño sobre una escalera con ángeles ascendiendo y descendiendo.
