We say of ourselves we are divided. It certainly looks and feels that way most days. What can being church mean at times like these? It means when the world says division, we say “body.” St. Paul gives us that word and image to understand how we ought to live with one another, not as a means of denying our brokenness but as a healing medicine for it. Using the word body helps us begin to get our head around the interdependence which is the healthiest state of human community. We are a body with many unique members different in gift but the same in dignity. How silly and wrong it is for the foot to say to the eye ‘you are no longer part of us.’It may sound trite to some but it is a revolutionary idea and a transformative way to live. The truth is wherever and whenever we have lived out this notion, we have gotten one step closer to the dream of God.
