Draw on Sweet Night
Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 7:30 p.m.
The Cathedral of St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Road NW, Atlanta
Experience the captivating sounds of 2023 Grammy nominated VOCES8, one of the most thrilling and versatile vocal groups in the world, performing a program entitled “Draw on Sweet Night.” A place inhabited by the moon and stars, by solitude, dreams, fears and prayers, the night has given us centuries of exquisite poetry and music. This nocturnal program has a wide-ranging repertoire stretching from Venetian renaissance composer, Giovanni Croce, to the contemporary cross-genre American Pulitzer Prize winner, Caroline Shaw. The sacred music here takes us from the end of the day into night, praying for God’s protection during sleep, and gives thanks for Christ the morning star. And just as Kerensa Briggs’s Media Vita reminds us that in the midst of life we are in death, so Arthur Sullivan’s The Long Day Closes uses the approaching night as a metaphor for the end of life.
Gramophone Magazine said “The singing of VOCES8 is impeccable in its quality of tone and balance. They bring a new dimension to the word ‘ensemble’ with meticulous timing and tuning.” The Guardian described their singing as “…classy and impeccable, truly wonderful in its balance and focus.” KDHX, the PBS station in St. Louis, said of the VOCES8 concert in that city, “VOCES8 have set the bar for visiting ensembles very high indeed with this fantastic concert, a very tough act to follow.”
In addition to performing these beautiful sacred pieces, VOCES8 will mesmerize you with special arrangements of popular and jazz tunes, enchanting ballads, and even iconic James Bond songs. This concert promises to be an unforgettable experience.
