The Pilgrims came from England for “The New World” in 1620.  In 1619, “…20 and odd Negroes….” arrived in what would become Virginia.  Abducted, enslaved and transported they were brought to the “The New World” from their homeland of Angola.  Captain William Tucker took two of them, a man and a woman, into his household and allowed them to marry. So, Isabella and Anthony married and gave birth to William, the first recorded black child born here before America was a nation.  William was baptized as an Anglican in 1624. This year in The United States, and in the Episcopal Church we mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of William’s parents, and the innumerable men, women and children who would come after them to America.
