God is political but not partisan! That’s important for followers of Jesus to remember as we make our way to November. Remember, the word politics means the “affairs of the cities.” Politics has to do with: making group decisions, power, relations among individuals, status and resources. Isn’t it true that Jesus told a story, gave a teaching or took an action that directly addressed every item on that list? Could it be that bringing Jesus to the center of our conversation about how we live with others in this nation will showcase the gap between Jesus’ teaching and those of us who call him Lord? Jesus’ teaching has always been “difficult,” but it is in his teaching that his followers find life not just self-preservation. It’s too bad we worry about politics in the church more than we worry about fidelity to Jesus’ teaching.
