This weekend we honor laborers. Those whose efforts produce fruit that benefit us all. Seems like a good time also to define labor for those who follow Jesus. First, it’s prioritizing “divine things” over “human things” according to Jesus. That means risk taking obedience to God over obsession with personal convenience and safety. Then there is the labor of self-denial for the sake of the common good and common wealth. Finally, we are to “take up our cross.” That’s our: wounds, struggles, longings and joys by positioning them in the wake Jesus created by his soul-saving labor. Jesus says, this work will secure your soul and keep you alive.

Este fin de semana honramos a los trabajadores. Aquellos cuyos esfuerzos producen frutos que nos benefician a todos. Este es también un buen momento para definir el trabajo para aquellos que siguen a Jesús. Primero, es darle prioridad las “cosas divinas” sobre las “cosas humanas” siguiendo lo que Jesús nos dijo. Esto significa arriesgarse a vivir en obediencia a Dios por encima de nuestra obsesión por la comodidad y la seguridad personal.
