At most weddings, we quote St. Paul, “love is patient, love is kind, love does not insist on its own way.” We swoon so much at those words we miss the punch line at the end of the chapter, “…put to an end childish ways!”. In other words, grow up! If I could give the great apostle any advice it would be to start the chapter off by saying, real love will make you grow up, and here is what it will look like: It will rejoice in truth. It won’t need to boast. It will be strong enough to bear all things. It will be so secure it won’t need to be arrogant. Our grown-up love should look more and more like this each year because we are being exposed to the real love of God each year. Real love isn’t a sentiment, it’s a soul force that changes individuals, households, communities and more. There’s no more difficult and noble pursuit in life than to allow yourself to be grown-up by the love of God as modeled by Jesus.

En la mayoría de las bodas, citamos la carta de San Pablo: “El amor es paciente, el amor es amable, el amor no insiste en sus propios deseos”. ¡Nos lanzamos tanto en esas palabras que echamos de menos el mensaje más importante al final del capítulo, “…poner fin a nuestros comportamientos infantiles!” En otras palabras, ¡crece! Si yo pudiese darle al gran apóstol algún consejo, sería que iniciara el capítulo diciendo, el amor verdadero te hará crecer y así es como se verá: Se regocijará en la verdad. No necesitará presumir. Será lo suficientemente fuerte como para soportar todas las cosas. Será tan seguro en sí mismo que no necesitará ser arrogante. Nuestro amor maduro, debería parecerse más y más a esto cada año, porque somos expuestos al amor verdadero de Dios cada año. El amor verdadero no es un sentimiento, es una fuerza del alma que transforma individuos, hogares, comunidades y más. No hay búsqueda más noble y difícil en la vida que permitirse pasar por el proceso de crecer por el amor de Dios, como lo modeló Jesús.
