Esther is one of the coolest stories in the Bible. Not sure why Netflix or Hulu hasn’t done a contemporary version yet. It’s a story about brilliant and bright women and a ruthless enemy. There isn’t much explicit God-talk in the book. God is assumed, and so is human agency. The story takes us to the intersection of God and us. In a word, partnership. The centerpiece of the story is a statement and a question from Esthers’ uncle. To paraphrase him: “God will save your people even if you do nothing. But, who knows, maybe you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” So God deserved to be worshipped, and the highest form of worship is partnership with God to accomplish God’s saving purposes. Who are you helping God save? Spoiler alert, it doesn’t go well for Esther’s enemy!
