There’s Moses, listening and talking to a tree on fire. And then comes the big question and the bigger answer. Moses: “What is your name?” God: “I AM that I AM.” Or, I will be what I will be. Or, I am who I have been and intend to be. Or, I exist and exert myself. Funny how God is intriguing and terrifying at the same time. Kind of like how God occupies past and future at the same time and works both sides of the street to accomplish God’s purposes. In this face to face between God and Moses, we learn that God is holy and faithful. That God sees misery, hears the cries of the oppressed, and knows human suffering. And that God gets big things done by sending ordinary people into difficult situations equipped only with an outsized sense of who God is. The best bible study I could recommend would be one that keeps God at the center. Next time you read the Bible, focus less on rules for living and concentrate more on the character features of God. Actually, list them out verse by verse. It’s amazing how meditating on who God is more than who we are can change your life. Moses put God at the center of his life and just look at what God did with that.
