Herman “Shack” Shackleford recently retired after nearly 30 years of service at Emmaus House.

Herman “Shack” Shackleford, Buildings and Grounds Coordinator at Emmaus House, recently retired after nearly 30 years of exceptional service to the organization and the Peoplestown community.

“Herman’s commitment and dedication have been invaluable to our organization,” said Beverly Banks-Greene, Director of Operations. “For nearly three decades, he has taken tremendous pride in his work and has consistently gone above and beyond. His contributions have helped shape Emmaus House into the welcoming and vibrant place it is today. We are deeply grateful for his service and wish him nothing but happiness, health, and success in retirement.”

Emmaus House has been a place-based mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta for the past 60 years and helps fulfill the purpose of serving compassionately and loving like Jesus. Emmaus House works to improve the economic and social well-being of the residents of Peoplestown and surrounding neighborhoods, and Shack has been an integral part of that impact.

Shack ensured that its facilities and grounds remained safe, welcoming, and well-maintained for staff, program participants, visitors, and neighbors. He did this with unwavering dedication, professionalism, and pride. His strong work ethic, dependability, and friendly spirit made him a trusted colleague, a valued member of the Emmaus House family, and a familiar presence in the community.

Whether tackling a major facility project or lending a helping hand wherever needed, Shack consistently went beyond expectations to make Emmaus House better.

As Shack begins this well-deserved new chapter, his legacy of excellence, reliability, and service will continue to inspire, especially those who had the privilege of working alongside him. His colleagues, friends, and community members will greatly miss his daily presence, steady leadership, and camaraderie.
