The next time you visit Camp Mikell for fellowship, you might joggle.

Two bright red joggling boards —  long rocking benches common in the South Carolina Lowcountry — were built by Church of the Epiphany member Brady Davis for his Eagle Scout project.

“I wanted to help Camp Mikell with my project because I’ve always really enjoyed the community that’s fostered there and the way it always felt like the only place where I could really and truly be myself while not having to worry about what others would think of me,” said Brady, 17, a rising senior at Decatur High School. “Camp Mikell and Scouts are both institutions that have had a positive impact upon my life.”

Brady started going to Camp Mikell’s minicamp 11 years ago and will return for work camp in July.  The joggling boards currently are placed outside Stephens dorm, but he originally envisioned them closer to Mikell’s beloved four-square courts.

Campers may not “necessarily know what joggling boards are, but they’ll know to rock them as that part is pretty self-intuitive,” Brady said.

Last summer in Charleston, while visiting relatives and waiting at restaurant, he and his sister Riley sat on joggling boards “and we both thought they would be fun at camp especially while waiting in the four-square line,” he said.

At Church of the Epiphany, Brady is an acolyte and member of the youth group who took a pilgrimage to Nashville. He has also sung in the choir.

For his Eagle project, Brady collected donations for materials and gave the remaining funds to Camp Mikell. He hopes that campers will be inspired to join Scouts and that those who are Scouts will choose Camp Mikell for their Eagle Scout project.

That’s already happening, said Camp Mikell Director Jessica LeFiles. Several Eagle Scouts have led and completed projects there and she welcomes others to reach out with projects, especially in trail maintenance, sustainable landscaping, and fun carpentry projects.

“Brady’s joggling benches are a fun and beautifully made addition to camp,” she added. “Campers and adult guests alike have been enjoying them and will for years to come.”
