For 59 years, the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta has been a close partner of Emmaus House, which works to improve the economic and social well-being of the residents of Peoplestown and surrounding neighborhoods.
As a place-based mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, Emmaus House helps fulfill our purpose of serving compassionately and loving like Jesus.
Connecting Through Literacy
Each summer, the Emmaus House Freedom School program helps local scholars in kindergarten through eighth grade learn to love reading. On average, participants gain eight months in reading ability over the six-week program, and some gain as much as a year.
So much of children’s futures depends on their ability to read, but literacy is just the beginning.
The Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools curriculum teaches young scholars to read in a way that connects them to one another, their families, and their communities.
Help Emmaus House reach its $35,000 fundraising goal by June 30 so the program can continue to foster connection through imagination, service, and literacy.
For us, it’s dollars and cents, but for Freedom School scholars, it’s proof that someone out there believes in their ability to succeed.
