God answered their prayers, sent a deliverer and brought an empire to its knees. Now, just “as the Lord commanded,” these 3 million people are on a journey from slavery to freedom. But, to get to the promised land, you have to navigate an unfriendly and arid wilderness. Now, it’s the 42nd day, the water is gone and they’re thirsty. After the complaining and quarreling, the people ask Moses two searing questions, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us, our children and livestock with thirst?” And, “Is the Lord among us or not?” Look how rapidly they overlook the inhumanity of 400 years of Egyptian slavery but remember there was enough water there. Look how rapidly they move from a legitimate and specific need to a general questioning of God’s nearness, loyalty and power. Just 42 days ago, they saw Pharaoh utterly defeated. Just 42 days ago they saw water stand up like walls and make a way out of no way! Look how fast and easy God’s past fidelities can be drained from our memories by immediate needs. They forgot and we confess we forget too! Like our ancestors, we can recently benefit mightily from God’s blessings and simultaneously suffer from a spiritual condition called spiritual amnesia. Legitimate needs and difficult circumstances create opportunities for new and deeper trust of God. Trusting God’s provision in the wilderness of life teaches us about ourselves, the nature of God and the reality of faithful living. The wilderness is where the growth happens! So, we must refresh ourselves with the memories of God’s recent fidelities and provision. This banking of God’s past saving deeds makes the lean seasons somehow less lean. An active and joyful life with God is driven by remembering forward into the next change and challenge.

Al igual que nuestros antepasados, recientemente podemos beneficiarnos poderosamente de las bendiciones de Dios y al mismo tiempo sufrir de una condición espiritual llamada amnesia espiritual. Las necesidades legítimas y las circunstancias difíciles crean oportunidades para una confianza nueva y más profunda en Dios. Confiar en la provisión de Dios en el desierto de la vida nos enseña acerca de nosotros mismos, la naturaleza de Dios y la realidad de la vida fiel. ¡El desierto es donde ocurre el crecimiento!
