If you had to summarize Good Friday in a word, what would it be? Solidarity is the word that comes to my mind. As superior as God is to us, for love’s sake God took on our flesh to know life as we do. That boggles the mind and is praiseworthy. But, God goes further in Jesus. Beginning with Judas’ betrayal, the unfair arrest, the sham trial, the beating and finally the lynching, Jesus becomes one with men and women around the globe for whom dignity, justice, safety and peace are a fantasy. He was literally crucified between two thieves! Through this solidarity with those at the bottom of society, Jesus makes his boldest and most haunting statement to us, “join me at the bottom in solidarity with the least.” Isn’t it a curious thing, how a religion born of the murder of an innocent man, now seems to have more in common with the people who put him to death than with the low and loathsome he became?

Solidaridad
Si tuvieras que resumir el Viernes Santo en una palabra, ¿cuál sería? Solidaridad es la palabra que viene a mi mente. Tan superior como es Dios para nosotros, Y por amor a nosotros, Dios tomó nuestra carne para conocer la vida como nosotros. Eso confunde la mente y es digno de elogio. Pero, Dios va más allá en Jesús. Comenzando con la traición de Judas, el arresto injusto, el juicio simulado, las palizas y finalmente su crucifixión, Jesús se hace uno con hombres y mujeres de todo el mundo para quienes la dignidad, la justicia, la seguridad y la paz son una fantasía. ¡Literalmente fue crucificado entre dos ladrones! A través de esta solidaridad con los marginados de la sociedad, Jesús nos hace su declaración más audaz e inquietante: “Únete a mí en los márgenes en solidaridad con los más pequeños”. ¿No es algo curioso, cómo una religión nacida del asesinato de un hombre inocente ahora parece tener más en común con la gente que lo mató que con el bajo y repugnante en el que se convirtió?
