Jesus riding a donkey is poetry. Earthly power always needs the poetic as a conversation partner. John F. Kennedy put it this way, “When power leads men towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of man’s concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence.” Jesus is the great poetic necessity in every age. Not the Jesus that gets trotted out like a trained animal to justify our various violences. And, not the church’s favorite Jesus, one-dimensional, frozen in art and glass. But, the warm-blooded poet Jesus- inscrutable, uncontrollable, compassionate. The Jesus too busy delighting in God and neighbor to play the pawn in empire foolishness. For just a moment on that long-ago day, when he entered town, we got it. It all made sense. We raised our branches and voices and shouted “Hosanna, here is our King!”

Jesús montado en un burro es poesía. El poder terrenal siempre necesita lo poético como compañero de conversación. John F. Kennedy lo expresó de esta manera: “Cuando el poder lleva a los hombres hacia la arrogancia, la poesía le recuerda sus limitaciones. Cuando el poder reduce las áreas de interés del hombre, la poesía le recuerda la riqueza y diversidad de su existencia.” Jesús es la gran necesidad poética de cada época. No el Jesús que es tratado como un animal entrenado para justificar nuestras diversas violencias. Y, no el Jesús favorito de la iglesia, unidimensional, congelado en arte y vidrio. Pero, el poeta de sangre cálida, Jesús, inescrutable, incontrolable, compasivo. El Jesús demasiado ocupado deleitándose en Dios y en el prójimo para jugar el peón en la estupidez del imperio. Por solo un momento en ese día de hace mucho tiempo, cuando entró en la ciudad, lo entendimos. Todo tenía sentido. Levantamos nuestras ramas y voces y gritamos: “¡Hosanna, aquí está nuestro Rey!”
