Jesus is not anxious, manipulative, or desperate for power. That’s because God is sovereign. God is patient. God has a purpose God wants to accomplish. This is good news because there are voices who are trying to remake Jesus in their image. They want Jesus to be the mascot for their movement. They want Jesus to baptize brutality and sanctity selfishness. They want a Jesus who preaches grievance and loves one nation more than all the others. On the other side of that coin, others want Jesus to be a private and spiritual leader who never speaks above a whisper, and has no comment about greed, injustice or abuse of power. Being a witness means telling the truth about who Jesus is. Jesus isn’t the possession of any of us. The Jesus of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John is free– free to bring good news to the poor and liberate the captives. Jesus is free to say we are all made in God’s image. As his followers now, our witness is to become Jesus’ freedom by taking up his ways and words. We’re not to put words in Jesus’ mouth or ignore the words that came out of his mouth. That is what it means to witness.

Jesús no es ansioso, manipulador o desesperado por el poder. Eso es porque Dios es soberano. Dios es paciente. Dios tiene un propósito que Dios quiere lograr. Esta es una buena noticia porque hay voces que están tratando de rehacer a Jesús a su imagen. Quieren que Jesús sea la mascota de su movimiento. Quieren que Jesús bautice la brutalidad y que santifique el egoísmo. Ellos quieren un Jesús que predica la queja y ama a una nación más que a todas las demás. En el otro lado de esa moneda, otros quieren que Jesús sea un líder privado y espiritual que nunca habla por encima de un susurro, y no tiene ningún comentario sobre la codicia, la injusticia o el abuso de poder.
