Our Lady of Guadalupe is also referred to as the Virgin of Guadalupe and refers to a title given to Mary, the mother of Jesus by the Catholic Church. In December 1531, Mary appeared to a man of Aztec descent in Mexico City. Our Lady of Guadalupe refers specifically to the experience of one man in Mexico. When Mary first appeared to this man, she asked that he build a shrine to her on the spot of her appearance. Our Lady of Guadalupe or the Virgin of Guadalupe remains a symbol of religious worship and national pride to the people in Mexico today
