Grief Program Facilitator Training: Walking the Mourner’s Path

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will host the Walking the Mourner’s Path Facilitator Training School on October 2-3, 2026, with an additional hybrid (virtual or in person options) session scheduled for evening of October 20 (time TBD).
Walking the Mourner’s Path is a ministry developed to address the profound question, “Where is God in my pain?” Recognizing that many faith communities often lack a dedicated and effective ministry for those experiencing grief, this program was created to fill that need. The foundation of the ministry is a series of eight weekly workshops that are both Christ-centered and rooted in scripture. Through participation in these workshops, individuals discover they are not alone in their grief. Surrounded by the constant presence of Christ’s love, participants find opportunities for healing and hope.
Each workshop lasts one and a half hours and is conducted over consecutive weeks. The sessions are led by two trained facilitators along with a member of the clergy. Every week, participants journey together on the mourner’s path, engaging in prayers, exercises, reflections, and workbook assignments that support their healing process.
Facilitator Training School
Faith communities interested in offering Walking the Mourner’s Path are encouraged to select at least two individuals to participate in the Facilitator Training School. While clergy attendance is not mandatory, many clergy members who have taken part in the training found it to be meaningful and beneficial, often expressing gratitude for their involvement.
Training Content and Experience
During the training, participants learn how to integrate the program into their church’s existing Pastoral Care ministries. The training covers several key modules, including Facilitating and Listening Skills, Understanding Grief, Building Ministry to the Grieving, Planning, and the structure of the Eight Week Workshops. Participants not only gain a theoretical understanding but also experience the workshops themselves, with opportunities to practice and develop their skills by co-facilitating a session.
