Adult Formation: Introduction to Sacred Harp Music
December 9, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Presented by Sarah Ward. Shape notes have been used in the United States for more than two centuries to teach singing to congregations. Introduced in New England in the late 18th century, the practice was embraced throughout the southern United States where it can still be found in tune books such as The Sacred Harp.
In this class, Sarah Ward will explain how shape-note singing works, offering seasonal musical examples to illustrate.
Sarah is a long-distance member of St. Bart’s who has been attending Indiana University for the last three years. She just completed two Master’s degrees this past May, one in Musicology from the Jacobs School of Music and one in Library Science from the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. She currently works at the Archives of Traditional Music in Bloomington, IN.
This class will be held via Zoom. Please email Audry, our parish administrator, email@example.com, for a link.
