Feast of Absalom Jones Service

Former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin will be the guest preacher for the Diocese of Atlanta’s celebration of the Feast of Absalom Jones at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, at the Cathedral of St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Road, Atlanta. The event is sponsored annually by the Atlanta chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians in tribute to the first African-American priest.

Absalom Jones' legacy was part of Franklin's childhood and upbringing; she grew up a member of the African Church of St. Thomas, Philadelphia, the first black Episcopal congregation in the United States. Franklin’s mother was an active member there for more than 60 years.

Bishop of Atlanta J. Neil Alexander will serve as celebrant for the festival service. Music will be provided by the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Choir, Atlanta, under the direction of Trey Clegg, choirmaster. A reception will follow with music by the Spelman College Jazz Ensemble. All are welcome.

Absalom Jones was born a house slave in Delaware in 1746. He bought his own freedom as well as that of his wife through years of hard work and went on to lead the African Church of St. Thomas in Philadelphia. In 1804, he was one of the first two black Americans to be formally ordained in any denomination. He was a respected community leader who put his own life in danger to help those afflicted by a yellow-fever epidemic in 1793. He died Feb. 13, 1818, and he is remembered each year on the Episcopal Church calendar.
